In this conversation, director Curtis Matzke and composer Tony Scott-Green discuss the process of scoring their short horror film “The Orchestra” and using music as a character in the film.
About the creators:
Curtis Matzke is an Emmy-nominated director, screenwriter, and producer. As the founder of Unfurnished Films, Curtis has contributed to numerous short films, documentaries, and micro-budget features. His work has been recognized at dozens of film festivals, including Chicago International, NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, Cinequest, and more. In 2018, Curtis was named “Most Diabolical” by the National Academy of Sciences and the Austin Film Festival. He is the recipient of a professional development grant from the Illinois Arts Council and recently had a documentary project fiscally sponsored by Film Independent. He has also served as a judge for the Academy-qualifying Chicago Children’s International Film Festival, is a reader for the Austin Film Festival Writer’s Competition, and in 2019 founded The Chicago Cinema Collective, a comprehensive compendium of the Chicago film scene. Curtis holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Media Arts and Technology from Michigan State University with a concentration in Television, Cinema, and Radio, a minor in Film Studies, and a Specialization in Design.
Tony Scott-Green sculpts original music for film, TV, and media and has worked on feature films, TV shows, documentaries, web series, and sonic branding for Fortune 500 companies. Originally from Scotland, he now composes and records at Greenhouse Sound Studios in Chicago and Los Angeles. Considering himself a storyteller first, filmmaker second, and composer third, he is a firm believer that “The right music helps an audience see better,” and is known for incorporating and manipulating vintage instruments and alternative textures into his scores, creating unfamiliar, yet undeniably emotive, threads woven into the music. When not composing music, he can be found going too fast on motorcycles, not quite fast enough on bicycles, and collecting guitars and oddball musical instruments. He is possibly the worst surfer in Santa Monica.
